How Much To Spend On Google AdWords ?

Brian Clarkson • Apr 23, 2017

The number one question we get asked with new clients is how much should I spend on Google AdWords vs Bing/Yahoo and other media?

Google Search Engine Results Page

My answer is always the same when asked how much should I spend on Google AdWords vs Bing/Yahoo and other media. I ask the most important question back - what is your budget?

We usually get 50% of responses from small business that have a standard business plan, a budget as well as a Certified General Accountant CGA. These are the best new clients as they already know that they must spend money to make money.

What a lot of business plans fail to breakout is the Marketing Plan and advertising plan. In December 2007 the great recession in the USA, Canada and the World put the brakes on any unnecessary spending and the size of major newspapers became all but a portion of their original might. Even the Yellow Pages started it's decline into extinction, you can see them is Museums throughout the Courtney. 19 Months later June 2009 and things started to turn around and people started new businesses and reinvested in their old ones.

On January 9th, 2007 Steve Jobs announced the iPhone would be available on June 29th, 2007. Looking back it was the perfect storm and the marketing and advertising industry as we know it would never be the same. The business community was very conscious moving forward and became smarter and better at their jobs, they started to demand a Return of Invest RIO on advertising and marketing initiatives. The old saying was "half of my advertising works" I just wish I knew which half.

Fast forward to 2017 and Google's revenue was over 75 Billion dollars as they dominate the search engine marketing real estate and enjoys 75% of the market share. It is interesting to note that the Google AdWords platform is very similar to that of newspapers classified ads. The same number of word in the headline, same number of lines in an ad and a call to action. The best thing with Google is you can say 100% that an ad clicked on by a searcher visited your website. The second thing Google did was created conversion tracking and now we can tell which ads lead to a filled out the reservation form on your website. And what keyword did the searcher type into search engine to prompt the ads to show on the search engine results page . So now we can say with 100% certainty that Google AdWords is working for the advertiser. If you are currently using Google AdWords and want to know if you are using conversion tracking contact us here.

So how much money do you spend on marketing? You can get free accounting budget software from the internet and it will have industry specific guidelines or better yet get a CGA Certified General Account. I worked in the hotel industry for many years and they would spend anywhere from as low as 5% to as high as 15% depending on the property, restaurants between 3% and 15% of sales. Many business owners will try and save as much of this money by doing local charity work, social media and having a family or friend build their own websites. And just not advertising, taking a wait ba see what will happen approach - don't do this you will go broke. All your competitors will be spending their 10%-15% and more is some cases to capture their market share of the business.

So budget 5% to 15% of your sales for marketing , the only question left is how much on print, radio, TV, newspaper and the Internet.

With Google AdWords, Bing and Yahoo we know you can track how much an ad cost and how much a sale of your product cost to make or produce is and what your breakeven is. As long as your Return On Investment ROI is positive you can be confident your company will remain profitable for years to come. Only spend money on advertising that you can track.
