AdWords is an incredibly powerful platform for growing your business, but the truth is that most companies are wasting thousands of dollars every month due to poor account management.
If you feel like you could be generating more revenue from AdWords
, the chances are that you’re making some of these common mistakes that are inhibiting your performance.
In this post, we are going to show the most common AdWords mistakes we have seen hundreds of advertisers make. And we are going to show you how to fix them, so you can take steps towards creating a more prosperous Google AdWords
campaign.
1. You are not using single keyword ad groups
The number 1 mistake that new AdWords users make is that they create ad groups with 10 to 20 loosely themed keywords. As well as one-word keyword. The problem is it’s hard to write ads that are relevant to every single keyword in the ad group. Resulting in a poor match between what users are searching for and what your ad suggests.
Ideally, you want to put just one keyword in each ad group. Doing this will allow you to create ads that are super specific to each keyword and improve your ad relevance.
Better ad relevance = higher CTR = Higher Quality Score = lower CPCs
Studies showed that implementing single keyword ad groups increased their quality score from 5.56 to 7.95 and reduced cost per lead by 37.5%. The average click-through rate across the board in all Google AdWords Accounts is 2.00 - Our average CTR and cost per click are much better, some as high as 18.56
Step one is creating single keyword ad groups to add each keyword to their ad group using the three different match types.
You will want to tier the bids, so “exact match” has the highest bid, “broad match modifier” will have the lowest bid & “phrase match” is in the middle, so Google matches the search term to the most specific keyword.
Once the above is complete, create advertisements within the ad groups that are highly specific to the keywords that are within them.
Keywords : Definition . Words or phrases describing your product or service
2. You are not using ad extensions
Using as many Ad extensions is an effective method for improving your Google AdWords performance
, this valuable tool is often overlooked.
Most advertisers will have set up 3 or 4 ad extensions set up, but very rarely will all nine be utilized, adequately set up ad extensions can double the size of your ad and not cost you any money. Ad extensions allow you to occupy more real estate on the first page of Google
and, as a result, increase your CTR.Enhance Your Ads with the Right Extensions:
Here is a list of ad extensions available that most advertisers can utilize.
- Callout extensions
- Sitelink extensions
- Call extensions
- Seller rating extensions
- Review extensions
- Price extensions
- Location extensions
- Structured snippet extensions
- Message extensions
Enhance Your Ads with the Right Extensions:
3. You are not bidding on your branded keywords
A long-standing debate in AdWords
community is if you bid on your branded keywords. A Branded keywords are search terms that include your brand name(s).
When you look at the data, it usually becomes pretty clear: if you’re not bidding on your own branded keywords, you’re leaving money on the table.
If you don't bid on your keywords, you can be sure your competitors will be.
One study found that when bidding on brand terms that ranked number 1 organically, it was possible to generate an extra $7395 in profit by also placing a PPC advertisement
above it. The quality score of these branded keywords are as high as 10 out of 10 and therefore lowering the cost per click on these ads.
The last point on this subject, by taking up one more spot on page one, the last one on the page gets removed and is now on page two, you now have at least two opportunities to connect with clients.
